This is on a Vaio notebook. Office 2003 sp2.

If you select Save As and click the Save In dropdown, nothing happens for ages, then the dialog title says not responding and eventually the dropdown works. Clicking the My Computer button to the left which is essentially the same works straight away.

Googling this I found it to be a common problem in early 2006 caused by a windows update. Now the laptop owner has recently turned on Windows Updates in the last fortnight, but in ask before install mode. The problem started yesterday so may not be related. I don't know if he has installed any updates and neither does he!

Has anyone seen any other explanation?

Go into Add/Remove Programs & look for KB908531 and remove it.

Since they have auto update on now, it should re-install and that may very well fix the problem :)

And if Devildog75 advise doesn't pan out, do a repair of Office....

I haven't actually uninstalled it as it came up with a dialogue box advising that virtually every programme may not subsequently work. Wasn't the thing to try at 5.25 on the blokes notebook.
I'll give the repair a go first.

Repair didn't work. Unfortunate user looks at me very warily if I suggest uninstalling the kb. I'll wait until he gets fed up and then do it.

Based on the symptoms, I've seen this happen before where you click the drop down to Save In and it takes forever to populate. Check and see if they have any network drives mapped. If they do, go into Windows Explorer, click Tools, Disconnect Network Drive, choose the drive(s) they may be mapped to.

Next try again in Word to do a Save As, and try the Save In drop down again and see if it responds quicker. If it does, go back and reconnect to the network drives one at a time (if mapped to multiple network drives) and see which one is the culprit.

Hope this works......
