SAV corp 10 server disabled.

Never seen this one before...

Did a complete uninstall of symantec corp 9, did the full install of corp 10 with all the tools.

When I open the symantec system console, my server appears disabled. Can't seem to figure this one out. All the services are started.

Any ideas? I did the install thru terminal server, that shouldn't make a difference. Did 3 remote installs in the last week.

Is it alwasy 'diabled'? When it's updating definitions on clients, it usually shows as 'disabled' and it may take longer than you might expect. Check the 'Status of Server update' on the right hand side column.

No, in the symantec console, the server is listed as disabled. I'm hoping it's just reading that way because of the remote connection but I really don't think so. see pic:

After the new install did you make it the primary server again. Must redo that after a new install.
 
That option is greyed out. After some research, found an article that version 10.00 (the cd they sent out) is buggy. I've downloaded 10.02 and will try the install tonite.

Two thing might be wrong, first symantec warns that installing via terminal services can cause issues witht he PKI file so they don't recommend it. Second I had this problem with V10, for some reason it thinks you have two primary servers running. I still don't have a fix for it but it does not appear to effect the status of your virus protect regardless of the primary server status your clients and server should still be protected.
If I hear something back from symantec on my issue I will post the solution.

Yeah, symantec told me the same about remote installation. They admit to some bugs in version 10, yet they're still sending that media cd out.

I'm having another problem now, I removed the version 10 and updated to the 10.02 but now it won't take my user/pass combo. I'm about ready to give up and opt for a different manufacturer.

I double checked the remote installs I did to 2003 server in the last couple of weeks and they are all fine. It's just this one 2003 server that's being a pita.

You need to un-install NAV and System Center completely and run a program called NONAVE that scrubs your registry and harddrive for any instances of the program. Email me if you can't find the program. I had the same issue on a 2000 server that I had loaded with an older version but wanted to upgrade. Alas when you click uninstall it doesn't get every little bit so it corrupts new installs.
 
hmmm... Thanks for that :) I assume you're talking of a proggie called NONAV (not nonave). If so, it's an unsupported tool?

If you tried it and it works, i'll definitely give it a go. Was there any issues after you ran it?

There is one called SCSCleanwipe you should run as well.
 
I'm having the very same issue. Anyone got any ideas?

Running the two removal tools and then reinstalling worked for me.

Here is whats happening:

Communication problem when you uninstall a Symantec AntiVirus server
that is on the same computer as the Symantec System Center
-----------------------------------------------------------
If you uninstall a Symantec AntiVirus server that is on the same
computer as the Symantec System Center, and then reinstall the server, it
cannot communicate with the Symantec System Center. To work around this
issue, you can uninstall both the Symantec AntiVirus server and the
Symantec System Center, then install them again.

this causes the primary server to be disabled. You must uninstall SAV and all Admin Tools. Next you need to completly remove all symantec files and registry entries. I have not done this yet caused I am also running SWS on this server so I am concerned about using the uninstall utilities to completly remove SAV.
 
Oh, I forgot to mention an upgrade or install over a previosly SAV product will cause this issue.
 
Ah, all figured out. Let me explain a little. The problem was caused by reinstalling SAV server. The machine also had SSC installed. So that’s what caused my primary to be disabled when reinstalling SAV.

Here is how to fix. By the way don’t bother with the uninstall utilities as it can easy be done manually. First uninstall SAV and SSC, then go into the registry and delete the Symantec keys under HKLM, HKCU. Reinstall SAV first and then SSC. The primary server should now be enabled.

Now all I have to do is restore the pki directory from tape back up to re-establish communication with the clients.
