Which takes priority during virus scans, the definition date on the server that manages the clients, or the definition date on the client? The license has expired on several clients and I don't have approval yet from accounting to purchase, so will the server definitions & scans protect me for the moment?

I don't understand the question. You wonder what takes priority with virus protection? I would hope that you would protect the server first if that is where everybody stores their data. Basically, the virus scanner is designed to protect the computer in which it is installed. You can download files from the server safely (for the most part) if the virus scanner is updated as it should be. However, users can still download infected files from the Internet and mess up their own systems. Personally, I would protect the server because if your server gets infected, the virus can migrate to all of the clients. If one of your clients is infected, the virus will probably be stopped once it reaches the server (depending on the topology you have set up).

Maybe I can explain a little more concisely.

SAV is installed on the server, then is rolled out remotely to the clients. The config is setup so that the clients get their updates from the server.

I noticed the other day while at a client workstation that the definition date was about a month different than the date of the definitions on the server. After I ran LIVE UPDATE from the client, the message said it had the most recent updates.

I ran LIVE UPDATE at the server, and got a fresh set of defs.

It was weird and I was just trying to confirm exactly which set of defs is protecting the client....the ones dated a month previous or the brand new ones sitting on the server?

There are two good ways to determine what virus definitions in use by a client.

1. Doubleclick the yellow shield (or run the front end: Start > Programs > Symantec Client Security) in the system tray area and the date will be staring at you

2. Open the Symantec System Center Console (SSC) which will list the current virus definitions in use at the server and clients.

This is Symantec Antivirus, right?

Whichever definitions that are installed on the client - those are the ones in use. You need to get management to expedite this approval ASAP!

Sadly, accounting says "can't afford it this quarter." I resorted to installing 7.6 on the clients again so I can at least ensure I have current AV defs at each workstation.

I've got about 40 days left before I have to renew my licensing at server level, so I can forumulate a new battle plan to include my clients in the purchasing scenario. Thanks to everyone who provided advice/support. Stars to all!

lb63640 - Get "can't afford it this quarter" in writing from accounting. Write them a pleasant email that outlines what computer security professionals say about the need for AV. Be nice, this is only CYA.

If anything bad happens, you want to be clear that you asked for updated AV software. Then the OT you spend to get it working won't make you look bad.
