I am using a hard drive which has sata connectors and one power connector that you normally find on a PATA drive ( but I have no PATA interface ) I have just connected up the SATA power and interface cables and it works fine, but I was wondering why does this drive ( MAXTOR ) have this additional power option and when would anyone use it. Is it best to use SATA power connection as i have done?

When SATA drives were introduced they generally had both old style (PATA) power and SATA power connectors. You can use either. Power supplies didn't then generally (some till don't!) have SATA power connectors - so is for backward compatibility.

Thank you....I wonder if there have been issues with users trying to connect both at the same time

I don't know why but the manufacturers explicitly say not to connect both....one or the other.
