SATA & IDE together

I'm currently running a 2.4 P4 with a gig of ram on a giga-byte GA-K1100 (can't remember exact model) motherboard.

I currently a CD & DVD drive on one IDE channel, and 80gig (system) and 120gig (storage) drives on the other channel.

My drives are insufficient for my storage purposes, co could I add two SATA drive to the system without any major problems?

I would obviously need to upgrade my PSU at the same time (running a ATI Radeon 9600 and Soudblaster Audigy 2 as well). My current PSU is 400 watt, but I doubt that would be sufficient.

The SATA drives would be for storage only, so speed would not be an issue, but in Ireland SATA drives are much cheaper than IDE (for larger capacity).

Any known issues running both IDE and SATA together?

TIA,
Michael

No issues, just remember to turn on the SATA controller in the bios, install your SATA controller drivers once in Windows and of course as with all new disks partition and format before use.
Administrative Tools/Computer management/Storage/Disk management, then prepare disks as required for use.

Excellent, thanks Martin!

Didn't think there would be any issues (separate controllers for IDE and SATA)

Time to go shopping!

An interesting thread on this issue is here:

I put a couple of SATA drives into my system and didn't have any real difficulties getting them to play nicely with my IDE drives. The real issues didn't arise until I decided I just *had* to stripe the SATA drives and start booting from them.

I try not to let my ignorance prevent me from offering a strong opinion.

You should have no problems.
I am running a promise ATA 133, SATA, Nvidia Nforce IDE, ITE Raid, and Sis Raid controllers all on one Gigabyte MB

the only issue you may have is which controller wants to be first in the boot process...I recommend just leaving it at HD0 in the BIOS.

I definitly prefer the SATA controller as the first boot drive.

Thanks folks.

As I said, I'm in need of storage. Judging by how fast I used up 260Gb (60Gb external disk as well), I'm going to slot in a pair of 250Gb SATAs in the next few weeks.

Time for a new PSU then!
