SATA HDD connections

I notice that the SATA specific power connectors from the PSU appear to have a fifth (purple) wire to them. Is this supplying a different voltage line to the hard drive (3.3v maybe?), and if so, why? These drives appears to function satisfactorily when a conventional 4-pin molex power connector is used, but maybe there's a Zener lurking somewhere to provide that additional voltage...
