I installed Windows XP on my new Sata 2 HD. The HD is setup in IDE mode in the bios so when the Windows install asks for SCSI or RAID drivers I don't have to install them. Windows detects my HD as IDE even though it's Sata. Now windows is installed and everything is OK but I would like to switch to native SATA in the bios and activate NCQ. If I do this in the bios with the current install, Windows does not boot. I know I have to load a driver but how would I go about doing this?? Any insights? Thanks in advance

In that case you would have to do a REPAIR install, with supplying the correct driver (F6 when you install)...

the driver you will find on the CD supplied with the motherboard or on the manufacturers website...

but... WHY? if you can mask the SATA as PATA it should be fine and dandy...

Thanks for the reply, I guess a repair install could resolve the issue.. Do you think there's any other way of doing this though? I want to do this to activate native command queuing which is supposed to be a very good feature with Western Digital HDs. Thank you!

the windows loader needs to be aware of the correct driver and where it is located...

afaik, the only way you are going to do that is to do a repair install, which will leave your data intact and revert the OS install to a kinda fresh state, then all you have to do is reinstall all the HOT FIXES / UPDATES again...
