SATA DMA question...

I have one last thing to get working that is crucial on my laptop: the dvd playback. I used to use MPlayer, was happy with it. Since that time though, there have been numerous kernel updates. Anyway, now I'm having problems getting it working, so I'm starting from the very beginning (removed all packages, libdbdread, etc...).

I have an Inspiron 6000 that has SATA hard drive and cdrom, so naturally, the hard drive is /dev/sda. My cdrom on the original build was /dev/hdc but since I rebuilt the kernel a few times (still trying to tweak), it has since become /dev/sr0. I think it has to do with SCSI emulation being enabled for my USB jump drive and external hard drive. Anyway, obviously I can't hdparm /dev/sr0 because it's SCSI emulated, and hdparm is only for ide. So how in the world do I turn on DMA for my DVD-ROM drive. K3B seems to work beautifully burning cds (still haven't burned a DVD yet, I think this whole process has something to do with it...) Anyone have any ideas?

If you are using any 2.6.x kernel, Why do you need SCSI emulation anyway? I vaguely remember, back in the RH9 days, that I was able to refere to my CDRW as both its native device and also through its emulated node.

Well, doesn't seem to be doing that. I need SCSI emulation for USB 2.0. That's why I've got it on. Doesn't seem to work without it. Anyone have any input on a better way to set that up for my USB 2.0 jump drive and USB 2.0 external hard drive (and will also need firewire...) let me know.

However, my main question seems to be solved. I don't have DMA set to on with either my hdd or my my DVD+-RW drive, but dvds are playing fine, I burn fine. Maybe it's just that SATA is fast enough and/or my CPU is quick enough to take care of that all on its own. No frame loss, quality is great. If only I could figure out how to get mplayer to display the DVD full screen instead of tiny... I'll get that though...

You need SCSI support, more specifically, SCSI Disc support for USB not SCSI emulation.

You can use the F-key for full screen in mplayer. You can also use the G-key to toggle the controll panel when using gmplayer.
