I have a location (G3si V8) that we have had to replace the SAT terminal because of a failure.
The replacement (a LINK MAX 900) has arrived and in trying to connect it I am unable to access the settings menu for the terminal.
I searched and found that Ctrl + F1 should bring up the settings menu but that seems to do nothing except beep at me.
I have also tried turning the terminal off and then holding Ctrl + F1 when turning on the terminal.
Still no settings menu.

I am hoping that someone might have an idea of what I'm doing wrong and can steer me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!!

This article details about 715 Terminal Options.

NOTE: This information does not apply to the 715GBCS System Administration Terminal (SAT)

Comcodes:
715 Amber Monitor/Controller with Keyboard - 501014468
White Monitor/Controller with Keyboard - 106463326
Amber Monitor/Controller only - 106463433
White Monitor/Controller only - 106463466
102-Key Keyboard only - 106465123

If the technician is onsite with a replacement for the 715 terminal, check the ticket notes to see if any troubleshooting is done prior to dispatch. If not, troubleshoot the R1 to see if the 715 terminal is the cause of the problem.

OPTIONING THE 715 TERMINAL:

To option the 715 terminal, use the following procedures:
1.Turn power on to the 715 terminal.
2.Press Ctrl+F1 simultaneously to display the Setup Menu.
3.Arrow down to Communication Options and pressReturn.
4.Change appropriate fields by moving the cursor to the option field and using the space bar to scroll through the possible settings of each option. For correct option settings, see the tables below.
5.Press F1 to return to the Setup Menu.
6.Go to any other option screens that need to be changed byarrowing down, pressing Return, and repeating steps 4 and 5.
7.Press F5 to save values when completed; then pressCtrl+F1 to exit.
8.Press Return once or twice to get a login prompt.

NOTE: If you receive x's at this point, pressCtrl+F14 simultaneously (this will reset the baud rate to 4800)
9.Log into AUDIX using terminal type 513.

CREATING WINDOWING ENVIRONMENT -

Explain how to use Windowing if the administrator uses one SAT for both switch and AUDIX administration:
1.To display Windowing function key labels at the bottom of the screen, press Ctrl+F3.
2.If no labels appear, Windowing is not optioned on this SAT---go to WINDOWING OPTIONS SETUP below
3.You might see [Windows 1 Host] on the [F1] label and [Windows 2 Host] on the [F2] label.
If not, you should see [Next Window] on the [F2] label.
4.In either case, press F2 to try to bring up the AUDIX window (P1 should appear at the bottom of the screen and an AUDIX login prompt at the top).
5.If the screen is split in half, press F3 to go to full screen mode.
6.If there is no AUDIX login prompt, press Ctrl+F14 3 or 4 times or until the login prompt appears. Log into AUDIX using terminal type 513. Press Ctrl+F8 to exit the Windowing environment.
7.If no AUDIX login prompt appears, see below for Windowing options setup.

WINDOWING OPTIONS SETUP:

The S75/G1/G3 must be connected to Port 2, the AUDIX to Port 1 on the back of the 715 terminal. In this configuration, No Null modem cable is used in either port.

In this scenario, a PARALLEL (non-572 or 475) printer must be used if a printer is needed.

FUNCTION KEYS TO PRINT -

After setting the options on the printer, display the form to be printed on the 715 screen. Press Ctrl+F4 thenF3 to print the data on the screen. After the data has been printed, pressing Ctrl+F8 will return the AUDIX function keys.

POSSIBLE TROUBLE WITH PRINT FUNCTION KEYS USING A SERIAL PRINTER -

If the printer function key labels do not appear whenCtrl+F4 is pressed, do the following:
1.Re-verify the printer is plugged into the SAT Port 1, not the port with the picture of a printer above it.
2.Re-verify the printer has been powered off/on after the options have been set.
3.Make sure the Parallel Port on the User Preferences Menu is set to disabled.

HELPFUL HINTS -
•Port 2 is DTE; Port 1 is DCE. Normally the AUDIX is connected to Port 1. If you wish to connect it to Port 2, you will need a null modem cable.
•Pressing Ctrl+F8 will restore the AUDIX or PBX function keys.
•F14 is not on the row with the other function keys. It is down and to the right of the row of function keys and is also labeled'pause' .
•When using a 715 terminal to option a modem, you must connect the modem to Port 2.

Thanks for the reply, Ken!

I have tried the Ctrl + F1 keys as stated in your post but no Setup Menu appears.
I have tried both connected to the Definity and not connected and nothing comes up on the screen. It just beeps at me.

The model number is a MAX900 terminal though and not a 715.
We got the same model terminal as was in use before. I can verify that it did function correctly before it failed.

I am wondering now if the terminal is bad out of box.

Max 900 was a very old SAT terminal.
Other terminals and software emulation can be used:

610 Business Communications Terminal (BCT)
615 Business Communications Terminal (BCT)
513 Business Communications Terminal (BCT)
4410 Data Terminal
4425 Data Terminal
PC 6300 (with 4410 or 513 emulation).

ASA Avaya Site Adminstration

Refer to the following documents for additional information on using these
terminals:

610 Business Communications Terminal (BCT), 999-300-270
513 Business Communications Terminal (BCT), 999-700-486
DATASPEED 4410 Display Terminal, 999-300-180
DATASPEED 4425 Display Terminal, 999-310-181

On systems without available data channels, the SAT connects to the processor
through a direct 9600 baud EIA connection on the back of the control cabinet.
If a data channel is available, the SAT can be connected through a Digital
Terminal Data Module, a Processor Data Module, or an Asynchronous Data Unit used
in conjunction with a TN726 Data Line circuit pack.

The SAT requires 120-volt 60-Hertz commercial power from a 3-wire grounded
outlet. AC power requirements for the SAT are explained in Chapter 12 of this
document.
The dedicated SAT must be located in the same equipment room as the switch
cabinet(s) and can be used on a table or desk.
It requires approximately 3 square feet of space.

You're probably better off with a PC running ASA with a serial port. Especially on an R8 without ethernet access as you can use RDP on the PC running ASA to give you LAN access.

Well, it looks like I have a defective unit since no amount of pressing Crtl + F1 brings up amy menu.

The end users were wanting a console there for familiarity sake.
I will be contacting the vendor for this console about not being able to access the config menus.
If they cannopt help me then I will move forward with placing a PC and using ASA.

I appreciate all of the info and the linked Docs!!

Hi,
I am trying to find out what I am missing in my settings on my laptop. I am trying to connect to an old Avaya Definity that had an old link terminal the only other description was link Lucent no model number. If you turn it on it has garbage on screen and makes an obnoxiousness noise. I have tried with ASA and it says I am connected but the cursor just blinks it has the blue screen with the function boxes showing but will not respond to typing or any other key. I also tried using Hyper Terminal and could log in but could not execute any commands did not even get the boxes to appear. I tried changing different settings but it stayed the same or made it worse. I even downloaded hyper access and that acted the same but the screen was worse. Any help would be appreciated they also need the time changed and until I can get access can't even do that. i thought I had a cheat sheet showing how to change from console but can't find. any help would be welcomed. Thank You

Lately, we have replaced 715 terminals with inexpensive PC's. You can purchase a PC with keyboard/mouse/monitor for less than a terminal.

We then load AVCom on the PC. Just down and dirty, but it just always works. The other advantage is that you can potentially load Logmein or something similar on the PC for remote access as well.

Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, here I am, stuck in the middle with you.
