Machine Spec: Athlon XP1600+ (not o/c) with SK6 Cooler on Abit KT7A Mobo powered by Enermax EG365P-VE, 512Mb Crucial PC133 SDRAM
(Also fitted: 120Gb+40Gb ATA100 HDD, Artec 54xCDROM, Sony 32x10x4 CDRW, 1.44Mb FDD, Cornerstone 21/81 fp VDU, SB Live! 5.1, 660W Speakers (2 Sat. + Woofer), Haupauge WinTV, Realtek 8029 NIC, Alcatel Speed Touch USB Modem (600ADSL), Kodak EZ200 USB Webcam)
I’ve got a GeForce3 Ti200 which is on it’s last legs (FPS drop-off in games all over the place, regardless of resolution or detail settings), so I decided to replace it with a cheap card. I don’t need any improvement in performance (frankly, if I could still buy a brand new one, I’d get another Ti200), so I went for a standard Sapphire Radeon 9200 (it’s the Atlantis with 256Mb DDR).
I fitted the card and powered up and it gave me one long beep and two short ones at POST (Award BI/OS – “Check video card”). Removed the card and re-seated it, paying extra careful attention to how it slotted in, no apparent problems, powered up, same beeps. Dropped my GF3 back in, booted up with no worries. Stripped the machine down to CPU+Cooler, RAM and the Radeon, powered up, same problem.
I don’t have any other machines with an AGP slot to test the card in, so I called the support line at the suppliers (just to make sure I hadn’t overlooked anything silly), then RMA’d the card, only to have it NFF’d back to me a week or so later. I’ve done all the above tests on it again and it’s still not working.
I’m mystified. Any thoughts?
