HI Experts! Any help on this will be greatly appreciated. We are under the gun and terribly confused. We are trying to come up with the most cost effective, yet ultimate performance hardware configuration for SAP. We need to present a total cost analysis ASAP. We would like to know what parts can reside on the same server, and which are better off separated.

Thank you in advance for your time and expert opinions.

What are your choices for platforms ? I'm slanted toward UNIX and against Windows.

The answer to your question is not easy, as it depends on the expected workload.

If you will have lots of users, you should have 2 or more APP servers, redundant to each other and load-balanced.

If you will be running lots of batch, you should stuff that on a separate APP server, depending on frequency and time of day.

Communication as well is a concern. Is fast Ethernet OK, or do you need Gb Ethernet?

If these are not issues, then a single server for everything would work, but it should be sized for database, users, batch and future growth in all 3 areas.
