Does anyone know how to setup Samaba share security?
Basically, when NT users attached to a Samba share, I want them to be prompted for an AIX username and password before they can access this share.
Currently, anyone who knows the share name has full access.

Any ideas?

hi ,

I think that , you can only setup the initial username and password ,once for the share to be viewed, thereafter that user who is using the PC will be able to access the share without a password unless the PC is rebooted and then the password will have to be re-entered, OR from a new PC accessing the share the password has to be entered.

TO do this

global

security = share

your share

guest ok = no
username = ??

?? is the username created on the UNIX server and owns directory you want to share

then use smbpasswd -a ?? ( ?? = username)
to add a password this will be used to access the share

Once set up , restart samba daemons

run testparm to check smb.conf file validility

then connect to share from windows , you should be prompted
for a password . Note :- you will only be prompted for a password for the first time , and if successfull , you won't be prompted for another password.

Also have a look at :-

Thanks for the info.

I tried what you suggested with the smbpasswd. I get the login prompt on the NT machine but it doesn't take any of the usernames I put in.
