I have 3 machines on a LAN: a Win98, a XP, & a RedHat Linux 8.0. I want the Win98 & Linux boxes to be networked [in a peer-to-peer configuration] for file & printer sharing, but to have neither available to the XP machine. Here is what I have done so far:
1. Installed a network card on Linux box. Am able to browse the web & check e-mail.
1. Started 'client services for M$ networks' on the Win98 box. Setup a network ID, along with a password.
2. Installed Samba & started the daemons via '/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start'.

What do I do next? The Win98 machine has no idea anything is connected to it, & neither does the Linux box. I think I have to update a config file on the Linux box, but don't know how/which one to edit. And RedHat's site only has howto's for experienced admins, which I am not. If I can't do this in a peer-to-peer fashion then I would prefer to have the Win98 box as the server. Also, please keep in mind that I'm a total linux newbie. Thanks in advance for your help.

First, you need to have something shared on the 98 machine. Right click on the folder or printer to setup sharing - use a password or the xp computer will be able to get in.

Next, you need to create samba users on RH, and shared directories.

To access the win98 computer from Red Hat:
At red hat, mount the 98 share like any other drive.

To access RH from 98, navigate through network neighborhood, or map a drive letter.

For more specifics on any of the above, just post back.

Okay, I setup sharing on printer of the Win98 machine & setup passwords. I also edited the smb.conf file on the Linux box. Now in Network Neighborhood I can see a box called "Localhost" along with the Win98 machine, but when I click on it I am asked for a password. None of my existing passwords (including the root password) for the Linux box or Win98 work here. Where/how do I setup this password on the Linux box?

You'll need to create samba users. This is not neccessarily the same as the local linux users, although they could be.

There are several ways, but for now: smbpasswd -a sambausername. Replace sambausername with whatever username you want. You will be asked for a password.
