hai, i have a typical problem in installation of samba server on solaris8 sparc machine.
I had unzipped the samba-2.2.6.tar file and executed ./configure of source folder, an error is being displayed as

checking for gcc .... no
checking for cc ......no
No accectable CC is found in $path

and the installation is terminated. Please help me as i am very much new to samba and solaris and i need to do the job urgently...

any help is highly appreciated
thankyou

I am not familiar with Solaris, but my question is are you usin the compiled version of samba? Maning is it ready for install? You could possibly have a version for developers (uncompiled). I made a similar mistake like that a long time ago when I started using Samba. James Collins

Hi,

On the assumption that, at least, cc is installed on your system you need to update your $PATH with its location (either on a temporary or permanent basis).

Solaris 8 doesn't come with the gcc compiler.

You can download a free one at and set the PATH accordingly and then samba should configure smoothly.

Everything is fine but a small request, where can i get

you can get samba from the same link as i gave above ... or from i think.

as for the steps to install, they are varied and many ...
the one from sun installs in /opt/sfw, and installs scripts in /etc/rc?.d
the one from sunfreeware installs in /usr/local/ and doesn't
my version which i use internally sits in /opt/samba and i configure inetd to work with it.

then for configuration there is swat, which also has a few different types of integration ...
