We have installed Samba on our AIX 4.3.3 server to replace an old AIX Connections application. We are pointing Samba to validate user id and password for the users to a Windows Active Directory domain server. The users do remain on the AIX server. Iser IDs and passwords match.

We are having a problem with permissions. The permissions on a directory maybe 770 and not allow a user to open the directory even though their primary group may match the group on the directory. For example a directory may have the perms userid1:staff drwxrwx--- and users in the staff group will not be able to open it. These groups are AIX groups.

If you open the perms wide open, all users can successfully open the directory.

I don't seem to understand what groups are coming into play here (AIX or WIndows) and how this is working.

Here is my smb.conf file:
# Samba config file created using SWAT
# from 10.120.1.78 (10.120.1.78)
# Date: 2006/05/18 08:50:42

hmmm

I think the problem in here is that when you try to access the directories from Windows it seems that it consider windows access as a different user!!! even if he is the same user in AIX with the same group!!!

that's the only reason i can think of, because when you open the directory to every one (777 which means rwx for the 'other') then you are able to edit the directory.

Regards,
Khalid

Is your winbind daemon running.
From you config (similar to mine), wouldn't your directory permissions look like
drwxrwx--- 25 root DOM+Group 8192 /tmp
Where "DOM+Group" is actually the NT Domain Group
