Samba is SLOW unless TWO clients are in contention ?

Hi: I'm running Samba 3.0.24 under SuSe 10.2 on an Athlon 64 X2, call it machine S. I have two WXP clients (call them B1 and B2). All have gigabit NICs, and they're all connected to a Linksys gigabit router. The router confirms the connection speeds. I transfer files by mounting a Samba share (provided by S) as a network drive on the client, and drag-and-dropping files. Here's the weird part:

Neither client by itself achieves gigabit speed in
transferring files to/from S, but if they BOTH transfer files, then they BOTH accelerate to gigabit speeds. If one client stops/pauses/finishes, the other one decelerates to 100mbs, and it accelerates back the instant the other client
resumes/starts a transfer.

All the hardware would appear to be in good working order, because S is a dual-boot machine, and when S runs WXP, ALL traffic between S, B1 and B2 runs at gigabit speeds, contention or not.

Any ideas, anyone ?

My smb.conf (produced by Yast), appears below.

# smb.conf is the main Samba configuration file. You find a full commented
# version at /usr/share/doc/packages/samba/examples/smb.conf.SUSE if the
# samba-doc package is installed.
