I installed Samba 2.0.7 on Solaris 2.6 and configured it using the webmin utility. I configured it to our domain and now when I open up Windows Explorer, I can see the server but when I click on it, it constantly asks for a username and password. Anything I can check and try?

Hi,
Anyone give you advice? I am new to Linux (red Hat 8) and Samba and am having the same problem.

Have a Samba book and a "Complete Reference" on Linux, which has some Samba in it but need to find an answer quick.

Seems like everybody on Christmas break.

Do you mean that you can't access the shares with a valid Samba user and password - Have you created any Samba users?

Or do you mean that you don't want the password dialog to appear?

Hi smah,

Managed to solve this. My problem was that it kept asking for guest login password, even though I specified security = share.
By browsing other threads I found one that indicated I had to create a "pcguest" user and then specify
guest account = pcguest

That worked.

I have been looking everywhere for an answer and have not found this in any of the books. So don't understand why it solved the problem if I was not using user level security. I thought share level security would allow almost anybody in. I had created a user in Linux and Samba and on the Win-XP station. All the same spelling, case and passwords.

Do you understand this?

Thanks for your response.

I am still having a lot of trouble. Have spent a lot of time trial and erroring this thing to death to no avail. We are running Samba 2.0.7 on Solaris 2.6 and each time I try to look at the shares that I created on Samba, I am prompted for a username and password and nothing works. I tried adding accounts to smbpasswd to no avail. The log.smb reads this and I can't find much info on it. Anyone know what could be going on?

We got it!!!! Didn't add the machine to the domain..... duh...

I did have to add the machine's netbios name first to ServerManager for Domains, then add it with this command...
./smbpasswd -j MYDOMAIN -r MYDOMAINCONTROLLER <enter>

Then started up the service and we were good to go!!
