hey all,
well it's happened again as all you deal with i'm sure, in effort to save the all mighty dollar my budget has been slashed once again. All i wanted was Win2k Server but no the penny pincher won't have it, so now i have done some research and found that my best route to take is using Linux/ and samba as my acting server. Here is the the only problem, i don't know nill about Linux or Samba. I managed to get Linux Mandrake on my server but now the problem is loading Samba on.

Problem:
i need a way for my users to autheniticate their password change on the network. I have it setup for "Roaming profiles" with about 80 "PC" operating on my network. Right now all my Profiles are stored on my AS400. The problem is we need to have the users change their passwords every six months, and right now that sixth month is approaching.

Next Problem:
Things i Don't Know about Samba-
- how to even get started
- how to install samba on the server w/ linux

things i'm sure i'll have a problem with in the future after i get installed
- how to setup users
- how to allow users to change their passwords from one pc and make it a global chagne on all the pcs

As a whole i think i'm screwed with this time limit, but if anyone out there can help me, the selfproclaimed dummie, i would be much appreciated.

There are MANY help documents out there for you. Google is your friend!

First, go to and read some of the documents. Also, if you install Samba on a machine, check out the configuration files (mine are in /etc/samba/smb.conf) and read them. There are usually good notes on the settings inside that file, which can help you get a basic understanding of Samba and how it works.

At any rate, the documentation will how how to set it up as a server, and you can ask for help from there!
