I have samba installed and followed tutorials to set it up. I can see the samba server on my winboxes, but when I try to connect I get a popup like:
\\server\\$PWS
It asks for a password. I don't know how to set it for viewing shares with any simple password authentication. Does anyone have a nice solution to this problem?
Thanks

To authenticate to Samba, you'll need to create the users on the linux side. Outside of Win95, you'll have to enable encryption on Samba and create the users with the smbadduser & smbpasswd utilities. To enable encryption in Samba, just un-comment the encryption line in the config file. It will then use the accounts created with smbadduser when you try to map a drive from Windoze.

Good luck,
GJ

Thanks! I am going to try that out. Makes alot of sense.

hi

u have to add samba users for login.
#smbadduser test:test
then it will ask for the password. give it.
but the login name in your win98 client machine must be "test" and also password must be the same as in linux. then u can see the node with named your hostname of linux. in that u will get the test directory. and after selecting it it will ask for the password. give it.
NOTE: BEFORE ADDING THE SAMBA USER TEST THE USER "TEST" MUST BE PRESENT AS A NORMAL USER IN YOUR LINUX MACHINE ALSO.
IF NOT THEN ADD IT by using
#useradd test

bye
