Hi,
I can see my Samba machine in the Network Neighborhood but if I click on it I get "\\Bart not accessible. You might not have permission to use this resource ....The network path was not found."
Can anyone help me out with this ?

Thanks

This is related to firewall.
When you installed the OS I'd guess that you took the default firewall installation, which blocks all inbound services. Whether you really need a firewall or not depends on the network environment your computer is in.

As a quick fix you can shutdown the default firewall on the machine running samba with
'/etc/init.d/ipchains stop'
which is equivalent to the command
service ipchains stop
try connecting now.
Let me know if this worked.

Hi,
I tried that and it said "Cannot find ipchains service". I believe that my Mandrake box is running something called "msec" for the firewall.

Thanks
Jason

yep..ipchains is for Redhat Linux and there must be something similar for madrake also..what version of mandrkae are u using..

mandrake comes with its own firewall called shorewall.
i am not aware of how to stop the service nor start the service...try something drakeconf..

It is always good to post the complete configuration and more details..to get fast and accurate answers..

Hi,
Someone out there must be able to help me. I don't know where to look because the log files for Samba don't really seem to tell me anything. Once again I can see the computer in Network Neighborhood but if I click on it I get "\\Bart not accessible. You might not have permission to use this resource ....The network path was not found."
If I try using smbclient on the box using this user it works fine. I've tried turning the Shorewall firewall off and this didn't work either.
I've run out of ideas.

Help !

did u try security=share in smb.conf file.
also check permissions on the share..

Have you done a "smbpasswd -a <username>" on the Samba server?

After stopping firewall did u try restarting smbd and nmbd services..

have u given encrypted passwords=yes.
also is it XP or 2000

i am running out of ideas..
How did u shut the firewall.
Did you use shorewall clear or shorewall stop.

Try shorewall clear instead of shorewall stop.

It was Shorewall , after I issued the command "clear" I was able to browse the share. Now , I need to know how to setup Shorewall for Samba. I did according to the documentation for Shorewall but it didn't seem to work.

I am glad that you finally got it working..
As I expected it was a firewall issue. I am not familiar with mandrake...may somebody here can help you..Good Luck.

I have had this problem, and I have found there are two possible causes. First, there is the firewall issue, which was mentioned by others. Second, I believe there is a Windows XP problem.
Here is my setup: I have a Windows XP machine, and I have set up two shares on my Linux box (running RH 9 and samba-2.2.7a-8.9.0). One share is for me (i.e. it has my username), and the other share is for another user (i.e.it has their user name) I have found that if I open the first Samba share from my XP machine, then I cannot open the second share, and I get the error message " ... is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network name cannot be found". If I open the second share first, then I cannot open the first share. The only way I know to get around this is to reboot my Windows machine.

SteveA118,

I am experiencing a very similar problem. I am running samba 2.2.7 on a Tru64 box which is using domain security to authenticate users. I am also using a netbios alias for the server. Connections to the alias work everytime from NT4 machines but are intermittent from XP machines, ie if I double click the server icon in network neighbourhood from an XP machine it comes back saying the server is not accessible. If I wait 5 seconds then try again it works. Can anyone explain this odd behaviour?
