If I create a directory and a file under that, then I create a symbolic link pointing to the newly created directory.

When I delete the symbolic link from a windows machine (contained on the samba share) it follows the link and deletes
the content of the directory and failes to remove the link.

Is this how it should work, and if so is there a way to follow symbolic links when using read and not when deleting?

I don't think smbfs is fully aware of symlinks, other than following it. This would be the expected behaviour.

However, cifs apparently is more aware of symlinks and may behave in the manner you are describing. (I haven't tested it.) Have you tried it?
