We have an Microsoft Exchange server in our office and all the users in the office connect to the server with the LOCAL SERVER name (with outlook ).

Our exchange server has mail.xxxx.com as the POP & SMTP setup. So all the sales peoples laptop will have the smtp/pop set to the server external address.

When these people are in office in our network they have no problem sending/receiving emails.

When they take the laptops to home and then use there own ISP provider to connect to internet and when they open outlook they can RECEIVE emails but cannot SEND emails.

Same thing happens when they are in road and use some dial-up connections , they have hard time sending/receiving emails.

What changes or setup do I need to do so that sales peoples laptops will not have an issue sending/receiving emails wherever they are.(office/home/hotels)..

Thanks
SAM

How do the clients connect to the server when they are on the road? VPN

You don't mention the version of Outlook or the version of Exchange.

If you're 2003 on both sides, you should use RPC over HTTP.

Answers to all the above questions:

1. THEY JUST CONNECT TO THE EXCHANGE SERVERWITH THE DOMAIN ADDRESS ,SINCE THE SERVER HAS THE PUBLIC ADDRESS.
(MAIL.XYZ.COM )

2. ITS AN EXCHANGE 2000 SERVER , THE OWA IS NOT FULLY FUNCTIONAL, SALES PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINTS SAYING THAT THE SENT ITEMS DOESNT MATCH WITH THERE LOCAL OUTLOOK..ETC..

1. The server has a PUBLIC IP ADDRESS?! Not very secure!
2. What's different. You should be looking at the same folder, regardless of the client.

Is there a tool with which we can SYNC the local outlook pst with the exchange server mail box ?
