Anyone have any suggestions for safest remote desktop software for use within a corporate network?

I have heard VNC is not safe.

Something that hackers would not use to get access to or use as a entry point. We have a private network and a firewall and the rest with regards to security but I also know that certain solutions are worse than others.

VNC clients in and of themselves are not generally the security problem.

as long as you are running the VNC client in application mode, not as a service, and inside the local network, not allowing it outside access, you should have no problems. Remember, on windows, the VNC client will have permissions the same as the user it is run under.
you may want to consider a user account that is limited to in-house only.

if you do need to access the VNC from outside the local network, use a VPN/SSH solution when connecting.

email from unknown recipients is a much more 'unsafe' route for hackers than a well deployed VNC client.

How do I setup the VNC to run as an application and not a service?

it will vary by VNC application.

as an application, it would need to be manually started. as a service, it would be running continuously once the computer has booted.
