If you google for mup.sys you find allll sorts of stuff. Mainly because it's the last entry you see before your PC goes into loading windows - or before it reboots if you're having problems. I'm having those such problems on a PC here. If I boot into safemode though, I get in (though can't find the local admin pw!!). If I boot into safemode with networking, the last thing I see is mup.sys and some loadtime and then it reboots.

Besides an OS reinstall - what could I do? (I'm aware wihtout local admin pw I'm pretty stuffed for "doing" anything anyone suggests to do, but I'd be happy to hear it anyway as I can still reset that and get in manually)

Are you sure it's mup.sys causing the problem?
Have you tried replacing the file, expand the mup.sys

Open command prompt Start -> Run -> CMD
Type cd\
type cd windows\i386
type expand mup.sy_ C:\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys

Run sfc /scannow

Run a virus check.

I doubt it's mup.sys causing the problem at all, it's just the last one displayed before the pc stops displaying what it's loading and fires up the blue backgronud for windows. Or, in this (and many) cases, the last thing it displays before it reboots. I don't think mup.sys is the problem at all since i can boot into non-network safemode ok?

did you run

Run sfc /scannow
Run virus check
Run chkdsk

At the moment I haen't been able to logon, it only boots into safemode (no networking) and I can't remember the local admin pw. So I'll have to cdboot and reset that and try other stuff when I'm back there but more important jobs have come up. I may just rebuild it but a fix if relatively quick would be better of course ;)
