Quick question for you all,

I have what seems to be a faulty s8300, so i am getting a new one shipped to me, luckily i was on this site about 2weeks ago and did a backup, now i am hoping as you can imagine that i load cm onto the s8300 and do a restore and hey presto we are cooking on gas, one worry for me though is licenses. Will these just come over as part of the beack-up or do i have to reload them on the server.

Bit worried as my kit arrives at around 1630 and my tech support (what there is of it on Avaya kit!! perhaps another post later)dissappears at 1700.

Thanks in advance
Woody

You'll have to re-install the license and Auth files and they can be downloaded from RFA.

With regard to support from Avaya....are they paying for support after 17:00/ If so, you'll get it.

I am new into the multivantage area really so can only go on what i am told.

There is no direct tech support for avaya?

And even you pay the high price for is it PSS or whatever, you have to what two weeks for someone to call you back?

Now i have worked with a business partner from a different region from me (he was in the US) and could not beleive the problems we have in the uk.

Now if i am wrong on any of the above i will be glad to stand corrceted, i think the Avaya Multivantage range has a lot to offer but tech's like me seem to have none or very little in the way of support.

I also work on the Mitel system, as a platform i dont think it is as good as avaya, but i have to say Mitel tech support is second to none, make a call and if you dont get through to an engineer there and then they generally call you back within 30mins.

Comments please!!!!!!

Hi Mac,
There is good support for Avaya in the UK, you just have to know how to get it. Your company has to be registered with Avaya and you need one site with a contract. Most of the probs I find with them stem from the European Call Centre where the agents do not have English as a first language and it can be difficult to make your problem understood. The Sateside guys a brilliant if yu can get to them (but sooo laid back their positively horizontal)!, best "cheat" is to put in your call after the European guys have knocked off for the day. Funny coz I've always found Mitel to be a bit slippery unless you know someone in Caldicott!

Your re-install problem. You may need to do a maintenance swap out on the RFA website. You havn't said what gateway you are using, or if you have an IPSI.

I think i will have to do that, need to learn how to use the RFA site so as i am not reliant on someone else to do it.

I am using an 8300 in a g350. I have blown the new 8300 and done a restore this is ok all my translations seem to have come across, but i have license error and the usual shutdown in 30 days message when i log into ASA, i thought that because the license is raised against the serial number of the g350 that the license would come across in the restore file. But i have now got a working switch with modem access so at least i can get someone to dial in and have a look.

Nick44, i appreciate the response, like i say i fairly knew in the multivantage side of life, when you say your company has to be registered, we are a business partner, also when you say one site with a contract do you mean pss?

I know what you mean about MItel but i like the fact someone answers the phone and speaks to you! Do you honestly get that with Avaya and not have to wait days for Borat to call you back when you are not on site!!
Like i have said i think the Avaya has more to offer than the Mitel, witnessed resiliency on a s8710 in action the other day and that was very impressive, pulled the plug on the active server and did not even drop a call when it switched to the standby! So i am keen to get this whole support issue resolved as far as poss so again thanks for the comments so far and look forward to further comments.

Cheers mate,

macwoody

Hi again Mac,
Just re-read your post and of course you did say it was a G350, sorry long day and dinner had arrived at last.
If you are going to do more with Avaya you badly need to get registered as yourself within the Avaya system.
You havn't said if you have done any Avaya training, but first things first register with Avaya University and get on the program, a lot of is self paced and free, but higher stuff you need to pay for, and the exams are chargeable too. I have a couple of ACA's and have to retake them every couple of years even though I stay up to date with the kit.
Get your self registered to do RFA licences as well. It can be a bit tedious sometimes but well worth it. I have worked through the old AT&T days, then Lucent, now Avaya and have seen a lot of things come and go over that time (14 years now) but it's an old saying that you can't beat a Rolls Royce and an Avaya PBX is certainly in my experience the Rolls of the PBX world. There is very little that it won't do, and the older Definity kit was (and still is) staggeringly reliable.
As you have noted you will need to swap the serial number of your gateway on the licence file for your S83xx. Make sure before you try to insert the licence that you have set the server date/timezone (this is how it works out where in the world it is located) and that you have set it to be stand alone and not LSP otherwise the licence will fail. Also make sure that the .pwd file had the dadmin login enabled and you have set up the dadmin login in ACM 4 (suser and both prof18 and prof2 in the profiles) I'm sure your collegeue who does RFA for you will know this, but the dadmin login is not on in the licence by default.
Also check the Avaya website for the latest patches you need to also be registered with Avaya to get some higher level downloads.
Good luck with it, and after a Mitel switch you will be spoiled.
No I don't work for Avaya, and never have!

Thanks for the reply, i can dial and all the time and date stuff, also i have done aca for the IP Office, so i will look into getting it done for Multivantage.

Thanks for the reply.

also don't forget when you have your new licence to "change (or display) media-gateway 1" and check the serial number of the gateway has not changed or corrupted. It shouldn't, but if it does you won't be able to see the gateway. A "save trans" and a "reset sys 4" never goes amiss after a licence file swap out as well.
I have had media gateways that appear to show the correct serial but just don't work, and get the media gateway serial number electronically, don't trust the label on the back.
Whack in on the console port with a serial connection using Procomm Plus or similar (9600, 8,n,1) default logins are in the documentation (we don't put logins out on the forum) and use the show mgc command to get the serial number.
