LOOKING FOR ANY ODD TIPS/TRICKS FOR 7900 series
- Here's why:
We are having an unbelieveable time with 10Gig XFP transceivers in a new s7910e chasis. It now appears that they are NOT hot pluggable (although SOME of the XFPs are..) I know how crazy that sounds and I could fill a book with everything that has transpired during this issue.. Per 3Com, we are now running non-standard code on the box and have to do the following for "correct" operation of the 10gig ports. To remove the XFP, you have to do a shutdown command. (no big deal, right?) BUT, even if you display the status of the port and it says its DOWN, you still have to issue the shutdown command. When you insert a new XFP, you have to type in undo shut. If you dont, the XFPs get REALLY hot (you can't hold them in your hand after a few minutes of being in the slots) and the fiber meter consistantly shows them transmitting at -31dbm (normal is between -1.9 and -3.5dbm). btw, doing the same command sequences with the "real" current software release DID NOT WORK.. We have RMA-ed over a dozen XFP's before this was escalated - apparently because they thought we were breaking the XFPs...

--- I am looking for any other tips/tricks on the 7900s since we just got 2 of them and there isnt even a section on 3Com's Kbase for this class of switch...

Still having the issues. 3Com attributes it to a small batch of bad XFPs (which we seem to have every one of them and all the RMAs gave us more "bad" xfps.) We are still waiting for a final resolution....
