Hi everybody:

We plan to analyze up to 4 gigabit LX segments at once, we need to know if is possible to attach a 4x16 or two 2x8 datacom fiber switches to a single S6040 appliance. And doest exist a interface on the WEB console to control the switches, or if this task is performed with the "attach it" software included with these switches.

Many thanks in advance

Best regards

Alex - the current 6040 does not use the standard Web Console. The existing Web Console does have the API or integration for control of Datacom switches but works a bit differently with the 6040 (worth noting: Web Console is not going to receive further development by Sniffer). If I recall correctly, either the next major release of Sniffer or the one after that is definitely gogin to have standard Sniffview console control for the 6040 - at the point you will have integrated switch control.

Best solution at present is what you mentioned - using the free Attachit software. One issue with Attachit (not a problem for some folks) - it's a client/server one to one relationship and therefore does not scale in a convenenient manner for multiple installs (e.g. if you were going to have it installed on four or five different Sniffers). My suggestions is to just use the newer version called MANAgents, which is also downloadable free of charge.

One last thing about the 6040 - it has only one COM port. If you're going to fully populate it with Gig modules and are using multiple sets of switches this can be a problem. Suggested solution is to use a remote PC to run the MANAgents server utility RemoteAgent or else acquire a Datacom SCS Switch Control Server (it's just a "PC on a card"), which is designed for the sole purpose of controlling two stacks of switches.
