Greetings-

I just passed the CCNA exam, and now wondering if I should go for my MCSE, or would there be, i dont know, more $$$$ in getting my CCNP. I know I want to be a LAN administrator, or field service tech of sorts. I KNOW I would be happy doing dedicated field service on Cisco routers, L-3 or 2 switches, if such a job even exists. However, I am sure I would also enjoy working on server configurations and so fourth.

advice, please

A question for you . The CCNA test you just passed was it the new 2.0 ? if so what did you use to study for the exam . I have the new 640-507 book with cd , but I heard this was not a reliable source . thanks in advance for any help !!!

naw...i did not pass the 2.0 I got in 3 days before the the 1.0 (640-407) was retired. As for study materials, I have mad trust in the Sybex company. A guy, Todd Lamell worte a CCNA Study Guide published under Sybex, and there was not one, whell, maybe (1) out of (80) on the test that were not in the book. The book I studied from was actually written for the 2.0. Anyways, any response to my ? would be greatly appreciated.

skoO0bz

Many of the Major Telephone companies throughout the U.S. are starting the impliment Data-Labs . Cisco is the product of choice we use. There will be several opinions on the subject , but I would say try for your MCSE that way it will give you a well rounded knowledge on LAN/WAN with your cisco training . Cisco.com has a list of
options you may want to check out . Good Luck !!!

My recommendation is to get an entry level job and work on experience before thinking about any higher level certs. I know that it is hard to get in the door without certs, but if you go into a job with MCSE or CCNP you are going to have to know what is going on. And no that doesn't mean knowing how to install Win NT or a router. I recently worked with a guy who had just gotten his MCSE, but I would not trust him in front of ANY server.

One more thing, more money is going to come with experience and not certifications. Yes a CCNP gets paid more than a MCSE -- but you are not going to keep a job if you cannot do the job they need.

OK, now off the soap box -- there are not that many Cisco only jobs - they are combined with Microsoft or UNIX or something else - so getting a more wide variety of experience and knowledge is going to get you a lot farther.
Jeter,
