Here is one that will make you dust off the cobwebs. I have a machine that uses RW. It has been working fine, however yesterday I went to open and write a report and recieved this eror:
ORA-12154: TNS could not resolve service name.
this is an XP machine that had been working fine. it had all of the updates from Microsoft and norton running. I've poured through google searches and all of the help I can find doies not solve my problem. Most say to check the TNSNAMES.ora and SQLNET.ORA files, which I have done and they appear to be set correctly. I have tried removing the listings in SQLNET and the ODBC settings ,then putting them back in, without much luck.I can manually log onto the server throught RW but any report I try to run will not connect to the switch DB. It keeps popping up a dialog box asking for the password. This is driving me crazy. Believe me, I wish I could move on past RW/ RR but we are still " evaluating" reporting options. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

often helps: close the writer, open report-runner, goto "configure", "define an ACD system...". redefine your ACD and make it the default.

if nothing changed on your machine (update of oracle-client, odbc, firewall settings...) I would go from bottom to top:

- ping ACD by IP and hostname
- check oracle-connection:
tnsping <servicename from tnsnames.ora>

are your reports based on the dictionaries provided by aspect?
open the dictionary-designer, open a dictionary, select a table and click "location". that should connect you to the ACD using ODBC-entry "Aspect CCV700" and list all the tables
does this work?

thanks for the tips. I'll try to redefine the ACD. Everything else I had gone over. tnsping gets a result as well. It uses the standard dictionaries, but I'll see what happens in dictionary designer.

well I've tried what you suggested- all to no avail. I can run the report in RR, but for some reason RW will not connect. it just gives that ORA error. I tried other reports and recieved the same result. This is actually fine since it is for a manager that only needs to see the information, not write any new reports. My main RW machien works fine. I'll keep plugging away at this problem, if I find an answer that will allow RW to connect again I'll post it.

RW uses odbc-entry named "Aspect CCV700". can you connect to this using "test connection" in odbc manager? it should resolve service-name and connect even if you try without user/pass.

Yes that works. In RW I can manually log onto the server, but it keeps bringing up a dialog box asking user name / password /server. It did not use to do that, the reports would automatically connect when run in RW. If i do not try manually that is when I get the ODBC - ORA error. I'm beginning to think the reports/RW somehow got corrupted, but when I bring over copies from another machine I get the same response. RR can still run the report fine, and since it is not a machine I use to write reports that will be ok for now.
we are looking at upgrading to release 9 which includes Crystal 10 reports. Hopefully we will upgrade soon and I can put RR/RW behind me. thanks for the help

Another weird one to check is the hosts file. I have some memory (like 5 years ago unfortunately so it's fuzzy) of a problem like that and it was the hosts file that was the culprit.

Good point.
Just forgot about that, because since some trouble long ago we got used to use the same name in hosts and tnsnames.ora.
Today I have no entry for the ACDs in the hosts file and in the tnsnames.ora because we have to use dns and oracle-nameserver. But there the systems are registered with the same name.
