RV042 or RV082, Load Balancing with same ISP?

Hi!

I planned to combine 2 DSL connections from 2 different buildings to speed up the connection.

But I just read in this forum, that the two internet connections connected to WAN1 and WAN2 must be unique: different domains, gateways, and DNS servers. Otherwise it will not load balance.

Since both buildings use the same ISP, this would be the case I guess. (I want to use Load Balancing, not Smart Link)

Can anyone confirm that behaviour? Maybe that cahnged, the threat was from July 2004 so possibly a new firmware was released to solve that problem.

If that router still won't work that way, can anyone recommend a router for me?

The firmware has changed somewhat since that thread. However, one thing that comes to mind is a possible problem with the gateway being the same. I suspect it will 'appear' to balance between the two connections, but since all the traffic ultimately passes through the same gateway I don't know if you'll get any real benefit. The balancing algorithm is fairly simplistic.

I hope I will get a faster connection because we only have ADSL 768 here, not more.

Would it help to plug a DSL router between the RV042 and the DSL line on one WAN port, so that I have different Gateways (normal DSL Connection on WAN1 with the ISP's gateway and a DSL router on WAN2 which identifies itself as a different gateway with a lokal IP)?

The DSL line speed to controled by the Service Provider and loop length from the Central Office to the premise, not the DSL NIU unless your DSL NIU is an old one pre ADSL2+. In that case it would need replacing. The Gateway IP address given by the Service Provider is one way to identify if you are being served by the same or different Gateways. That IP address points to or is assigned to a specific router on their end of the service.

I'm not sure that the rv082 supports GLBP (Gateway Load Balancing Protocol) but if it does it is your solution. If not then I would find a Cisco IOS router with IOS after 12.2(14)S. The 800 series should support the protocol and has an ethernet WAN port which will work with DSL.

I would deploy 2x 815 IS routers while provisioning GLBP to load balance across multiple gateways. You can use HSRP to load balance as well but it isn't as clean.
