Russian file names?

My friend sends me files over ftp, The filenames are in russian but on my computer I get gibberish. The files themselves open. From what i understand winxp pro has unicode and russian encoding built in.

We are both running windows xp professional service pak 2. Except he has the russian version and me the american version.

So is it possible to display russian filenames on an american copy of winxp pro?

My browser and word processing software have no trouble displaying or typing in cyrillic characters, but file names are a no go.

Control Panel/Regional and Language Options. Click Languages/Details. Click Add, input language, Russian.

If that doesn't work, when you open up explorer, click on the language bar and select Russian.

Q. Why localized files show question marks/damaged characters in the application X?

A. Most likely the application is ANSI. You have to set the system default locale to match the data you need to handle.

Regional and Language Options, Administrative Tab, Current Language for non-Unicode programs": set to Russian (Russia).
