Runtime Error 3048 - cannot open any more databases

This post got buried in Gen Discussion, thought I might try it here instead:

Has anyone ever seen the above-numbered runtime? The message reads (I'm translating, my Win2K is in French) "Impossible to open any more databases", or perhaps "cannot open any more databases", when calling a query recordset using DAO. The same thing happens at the same moment if I halt the code and open the query directly through the db window. I can reproduce the error, but I can't get any info about what might be causing it...
