Hi

I'm using Windows 7 64 and have a ATI Radeon 5870 video card.

I just hooked up my computer to my 42" HD TV.
Every thing works great but I have a couple of questions.

Does it stress my video card more to have it displaying on both my TV and my computer monitor at the same time?

I don't see any difference in frame rates between running both and only having one of them turned on when I play Age of Conan.

If it does make a difference does my computer know when I turn off my monitor or do I have to go into the video setting and tell it to only send the signal to one or the other?

Mike

I would say yes, it would make the card work harder. However, I doubt you're pushing that card hard enough to see much of a difference in the frame rate.

In order to push any modern graphics card hard, I'd think you would have to be pushing some really high-end gaming graphics or some sort of 3d graphics editing/rendering on each... but the rendering would be mostly CPU intensive.. Maybe if you had hardware-assisted 1080p running to both screens, but even then I doubt it.

Thanks for the information.
How about my other question?

When I turn off my monitor does my computer stop trying to send the information to it or does it not know the difference and still work just as hard?

I know it detects when most things are turned on and off but I don't know if it treats the monitor that way.

Mike

Not sure, but if you're concerned about that, you can just adjust your settings each time. You can set it to only display on one output device.

I would say that even if your monitor or tv were turned off a signal is still being sent to each. If you have power setting set to turn off your monitor after X number of minutes of inactivity, moving your mouse, pressing a key on your keyboard, etc will bring your monitor back to life. Your pc would have to know that a condition has been met to turn on (bring back to life) your monitor or tv. I would aslo think that IF the pc killed a signal to you tv/monitor, you would see a "No Signal" message displayed on the monitor/tv.

Just my thoughts.

Thanks for the info.

For now I guess I'll leave it alone as it is.

I don't see any sign that it is slowing performance in anyway.

I have tried a number of 3D games and don't see any difference in performance as far as I can tell.
