Running Totals that automatically changed summary type

I ran into a problem on a report where several running totals were changed from sum to count. I don't believe that I would have made these changes because the results were so blatantly wrong, but I cannot think of any other alternative other than perhaps a bug in the software.

Has anyone ever run into a problem with running totals where the summary type is changed?
