Running Total/Sort Order Problem

I have a running total which worked first time. The correct answer is dependent on the field I'm totalling being sorted descending.
When I close the report and open it again, the running total field is blank. In order to make the running total appear again I have to change my sort order to ascending, then preview, then change it back to descending.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong.
 
Perhaps the data isn't being saved with the report, are you saying that hitting the refresh button (lightning bolt) doesn't refresh it?

Are you saving the data?

Are you manually editing the SQL to change the sort order, or are you using the expert?

Make sure that you save the report AFTER you've made the change, and you might turn off the File->Save Data with Report to require a refresh, or if you have it off, it should retain the last saved report data.

When the data is saved with the report the total is there when you open the report again but as soon as I refresh it disappears again.

I'm using the expert to change the order.

Perhaps I should have said I'm using the 'Maximum' summary option in this total.
