Has anyone tried to use Running Total functionality in different version on CR? Have you experienced any difficulties?

In version 7, there are three methods to calculate Running Totals in the report: manual RT, RT functions, and RT Expert (which generates errors on page breaks and is basically very limited).

In version 8, Seagate has not tested the manual RT and RT functions, they claim that the RT expert has been "fixed". Does anyone know if this is true? Does the expert really generate correct RT in v8?

And most importantly, has anyone found an alternative/permanent fix to Running Total approach that does not have to be revisited when we go from one version to another?
I never used the RT function until v8 (been working with CR since v1.1) because I didn't trust it. It does seem to work reliably now.
The manual approach will always work, but the RT feature does save a bit of time.
Malcolm Wynden
wynden@island.dot.net

I've had several reports that used running totals in version 6. They ran very slow, and in some cases caused "System running low on resources" errors. When we upgraded to version 7, I tried the "Running Total Expert," only to find that some records were not counted if the detail lines were suppressed. But the reports did run much faster - just lost a little thing called accuracy.

The friendly support people at Crystal advised me to not use any of the running total functions, but to use variables instead (using 3 formulas; to reset, to accumulate, and to display).

When I got an evaluation copy of version 8, I tested all those reports using the running total expert again and they actually balanced. Thus, it is looking like they fixed the problems with accuracy in their "Running Total Expert." The use of variables has worked well for me with every version though.

Crystal did direct me to a Running Total document that they created that seemed a little helpful, They had me go to this site:

<A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> look for the file SCR_RunningTotals.zip
