I'm a newb so bear with me as many of you obviously seem very knoweledable and I would greatly appreciate your help. I installed server 2003 at home and installed active directory. What I would like to do is connect a few machines to this server so I can practice some things at home. My first question is I currently have my server connected to my wireless router. I don't have dhcp installed on the server, and I was wondering if it will work to have the router functin as the DHCP server, or can I disable dhcp on the router and have the server handle dhcp. I guess my question is will either of these scenarios work. And finally, how would you guys set this up so I can gain the most practical experience. And advice/info is greatly appreciated.

Both scenerios will work in theory. As long as your clients connect the wireless router then they should be able to pick up DHCP from the router.

Personally I would recommend configurin DHCP on the server and turning it off on the router as it will give you need practice with installing and configuring DHCP in windows.

Thanks Nevets2001uk. How would you handle DNS? I have DNS installed on the server. Should I configure DNS on the server and obviously use my ISP's DNS servers or only configure the server to handle DHCP. Again, I'm just looking to get the most bang for my buck. I also want to install alteris on the server so I can create packages, etc and practice because we use alteris at work. Thanks again for he help. All advice is welcomed.

You'll need to leave DNS setup on the server as AD requires it to register it's service records so that clients can find the domain controller, GC etc.

What I'd do is configure all clients to use your DNS server and configure that with a forwarder to your ISP DNS server. That way it will resolve all local addresses and forward any unknown ones to your ISP.

I don't use Alteris so can't advise on that.
