I've the Redhat Linux 8.0 from the book "Linux for Dummies". Extremely impressed by the new GUI and IDE.

Here is my question, I installed the server version by picking "customized installation" radio button then selected all the server-related packages during the intallation.

My system froze at least once a day in the last 4-5 days. The point of freezing is very undeterministic, sometiems even in screen saver's mode, when there is zero user interaction.

Here is my hardware config.
1) Asus M/b with Pentium 4 1GHz CPU and 512Mb memory
2) Riva TNT2 vga with 4Mb display memory
3) Intel EtherExpress Pro 100B
4) Logitech 2 button mouse with the scroller

This box is connected to DSL modem with a static IP. I wonder if the problem is one of the follwoing 2 or others?
1) Hardware compatibility, if yes, which one is the potentail culprit?
2) I do not have the real commercial version of Linux 8.0 from Redhat?

You have my appreciation in advance to spend time on answering this.

hi, shireenc. you can find a extensive support on hardware at this link:

if i had to guess, though, i would say your problem has more to do with configuration because your hardware sounds ok. but check the hardware list to be sure, and if that doesnt pan out, check your log files, find out what services are running, etc and post some more info about your system. im by no means an expert, but in order for anyone here to help we'll need more info. what we see depends mainly on what we're looking for.

You mention an Asus motherboard. I had similar problems when I first got mine. I'd walk in and it would be locked up and emitting a continuous beep. It happened a lot when xscreensaver would be running. Also happened in Windows 98 when encoding mp3s. I narrowed it down to the motherboard overheating. When I'd have to flip the switch to reboot, I'd jump into the BIOS and look at the onboard temps. It was usually at 140-some degrees or some rediculous amount. So instead of putting another fan on it, I took the side of my tower off, and have a small box fan blowing directly onto the board and CPU :)

Not sure if that's definitely the problem, but may be worth investigating. --
