I have a customer that wishes to have VOIP phones installed and powered by a POE switch. They then want to connect a pc to the phone so they only need to use 1 single network drop. That's generally not a problem since PoE runs on pair 7/8 however, GB connectivity runs on all 4 pairs. Are there switches that can do PoE AND GB at the same time over the same network drop ?

thanks

Your main limitation is a VOIP phone that has a built in gigagbit switch. Cisco has 3 models of said phones.

poe has 2 standards

the native standard run directly on pins 1,2 and 3,6

the injected standard does run on 7,8

VoIPFanatic,

YOiu have brought up an interesting point. can you explain what you mean?

what is native and injected?

what is the advantages and disadvantages of them?

in what circumstances would you use ewach setup?

Brian

To error is human.....if the machine doesnt work, then KICK IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!

native is generated by the switch. and you must have ample power supply in the switch to support poe. 1,2 and 3,6

injected is where there is another device between the switch and patch panel. this puts out the 48v required to power an WAP or POE phone. 7,8

or you could use power bricks.

there are not too many advantages or disadvantages. someone correct me if Im wrong.

if you have older switches you dont wish to upgrade you can use an injector. they come in singles, 48, 24. like another switch and takes up more room in your IDF. as weell as more Patch cables.

if your purchasing new equipmenmt and implementing VoIP then most likely you would want to go with POE switches. as these will take up less space.

Cisco 7971G-GE
Cisco 7975G-GE
