Problem: Our server is almost out of hard drive space and the nightly backups are starting to fail due to lack of space to write a catalog of some sort.

Info: Windows 2000 server with Exchange 5.5 and BackUpExec 8.5. Using two 9GB hard drives. The drives are set up as dyanamic and are set up for mirroring. Also they are on seperate controllers (duplexing?)
Disk 0 -
Partition C (NTFS) is 4Gb and has 3.2Mb free space. :(
Partition D (NTFS) is 4.5Gb and has 3.2Gb free space.
Unallocated space is about 100Mb.
Disk 1 - is an exact mirror of Disk 0.

Question: What is the SAFEST way to upgrade the hard drives on this server?

Thank you in advance,
Wayne

Can you add another drive and move some files? Maybe a snap server for storage? Glen A. Johnson

You could add disks and mount a volume into your existing file system.
I'm not sure about the required configuration for the new disks though.

You can move your paging file to the D drive to free up some space but you won't get a memory dump file if the server crashes. Your best option is probably to back up your server and then use something like Partition Magic to resize the partitions. I've used it a number of times in these situations and its worked perfectly every time - but they weren't mirrored.

Good luck,

Glenn.

you tried doing an offline defrag of the exchange db? or running perfwiz to move stuff around?

You can try this:

1) break the mirror first (i assume you are using s/w mirrored),

2) you can use the Disk Imaging software- Ghost Ent 7, install in one of your wrkstation, create boot disk, reboot the server with this boot disk.

3) backup everything in Disk 0 via network to the Ghost broadcast server. you need at lease the same size IDE or SCSI HDD free spaces to store this image.

4) replace both HDD in your server with the bigger one, and use the boot disk again to restore the image.
