running out of disk space due to catalogs

running veritas 11d.

the server is giving me the message that we are running low on disk space.

the culprit is in the veritas backup exec catalogs folder.
these are files that end with .FH extension.

can these be deleted?
what exactly are they for?

okay, I found some info here on them.

so they can be truncated, but you may have to catalog a tape to do a restore.

what is typical for truncating the catalogs?
2 months? 4 months?
