Running OpenUI and modules on 4/5 config

I've been asked to create a store using Miva 4.24 which the hosting company is running on VM 5 - I've hesitated to purchase and install OpenUI and any of the modules to do the customization because of this configuration which the download sites claim will preclude using the token features of the modules.

Can someone explain the token issue? While my site design is not elaborate, I would want to hard code my own category boxes in one column and the customer nav buttons across the top (distilling it down to Search / Account / Shopping Cart).

This is my first experience with Miva.
