Running Notes Client from Netware Server

Here's my situation...we are migrating 2000 users from ccmail to notes over the next year. The domino servers reside many miles away and no one in our district has admin rights to it. Currently, when an account is created we install the software to the workstation and configure it. A user.id is not provided from the admins rather it is done during the install. Parts of our agency have high turnover and many employees suffer from C.R.S. when it comes to passwords. What I would like to do is to have the notes client installed on the user's PC but have notes look to their home directory on the server for the user.id. This would allow us to remotely copy the user.id for password resets and for the future when the admins do provide the user.id prior to installation. Any suggestions?

Well this solution users up server space but I personally think it's the best way to run notes since the server gets backed up and has greater security than any desktop, not to ention they'l be able to use their notes from any workstation.

When installing the client you'll be prompted for both a working directory location and data location. Change the default C:\notes\data to [homedriveletter]:\notes\data

Pretty simple. Since most admins generate the same password for all new installs, I immediatley then copy the user.id file to a hidden share and rename it [logonid].id. For extra security, you can login with the copy and change the default password to another default. Your dept. will know but anyone that can access that pool of Id's won't be able to misuse them. One problem, since it's a different id file, if the user encrypts their mail, they won't be able to read the old mail with the new Id file. Gamesman

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking that route at first as well but space limitations will not allow that. I'm being told there is a setting within the client that allows you to change the path to the id file. I just haven't been able to find it.

Check the "KeyFilename" entry in the Notes.ini (at least in R4) Gamesman
