Running Networker on AIX with an IBM 8500 tape 1

After installing Networker on an IBM RS/6000 running AIX V4.3.2 and an attached 5/10GB 8mm tape drive (which is working fine using tar!) and trying to perform the installation test as detailed in the installation manual, we get the error message:-

media warning: /dev/rmt0.1 writing : A system call received an invalid parameter, file 2 ....

Is there an easy answer ?
