I'm familiar with the problems associated with installing and running more than one anti-virus program at a time, but I have customers who have done so, although I caution them against doing this. I wanted to know if anyone knows of a good, reliable website that explains it in simple terms that anyone can understand. Ditto for running multiple software firewall programs.

Check out this thread that was active not too long ago:

Some people have differing opinions on the issue, but I feel that when you have the right tools in place, you don't need to continue to add to the system as it will just bog it down needlessly.

Just my opinion

I checked it out, but I'm really looking for a link to a site that explains the basics in simple terms that users with little computer literacy can understand. But I do appreciate your pointing this thread out to me.

I can give simple reason:

Virus detection programs contain parts of a virus code in a database so that the can detect a file and compare it with it's records. It is aware of it's own files so ignores them.

However a second AntiVirus program will NOT be aware of the other programs files and will see it's database as a threat and attempt to delete it. Causing no end of problems.

Stu,

It's not so much a matter of their not believing, it's a matter of us techie types sometimes making assumptions and overlooking the obvious to us, not so obvious to them. I'm trying to cover all the bases when working with them to ensure I don't overlook such an important issue, but finding that with customers of varying computer experience, it's not always possible. Thanks for your input.

I suppose the easiest way to explain it is that AntiVirus programs contain virus samples to match, so other AntiVirus programs will see these samples as a virus and try to delete it.
