I am needing some help. I am currently thinking of building a database that will be my main switchboard for all other databases. I can probably do this in VB but wanted to have flexibility checking numbers in the Switchboard database. There are macros and some code that updates these databases and instead of going to each one I would just go to the Switchboard database. I would really appreciate the help.

Can you post a little more info? Are the DB's local or over a network, large & actively used or small & infrequent use, etc. If you link the tables you should be able to query from one DB to another (but you may wind up sacraficing speed for this)

longhair, can you elaborate on the loss of speed when linking tables? does it matter if the tables are linked access-to-access or sql-to-access? thanks. -brad bdfigler@magellanhealth.com

Brad,
I do not know if access-to-access or sql-to-access will matter much (having not worked extensively with sql server). What I have heard & noticed is that if you link & cross link many tables over a network, and these tables are activley used by many people on the network, and they are mid sized (say 50MB a piece) that you may slow down the DB's that others are actively using (and your switchboard DB may run sluggish) when you run your queries / macros. Also, if I remember correctly the linked tables are updated whenever their original table is updated, if the linked table DB is open (I may be wrong on this count).

Regards

Yes, I think I should elaborate on this. These databases are located on a network and each database contains small and large amounts of data. These tables could all be linked in just one database but I want to run these databases in from just one database since a database represents a specific process. I just thought that it would be easier to accomplish this running one database.

Define "running one database"...
Do you mean your "switchboard" db will be the only one that people are actively looking at and all your other DB's are just for data storage / calculation ?

Yes, that's correct. The Switchboard database will be the main interface and a means for adminstering these databases.
