Just rebuilt my home PC with a K9NGM motherboard.

connected the 2 IDE hard drives and 2 IDE Burners to the 2 IDE channels on the motherboard.

Connected a 400GB SATA II drive to the primary SATA channel and powered the PC on - BIOS does not detect the 2 IDE hard drives.

Removed the power from the SATA drive and powered back up - drives detected!!

At all times the 2 burners are detected.

Anyone had a similar problem or know why htis would happen

Running XP Pro

2 burner on sec. ide, hdd on pri. ide?
check sys-resources, is the pri. ide and s-ata using same irq?

2 Hard drives on primary IDE (set to master and slave)
2 Burners (1 DVD 1 CD)on secondary IDE (set to master and slave)

Have even tried swapping IDE cables so burners are on IDE1 and hard drives on IDE2 - same outcome.

can't get the hard drives to be detected in the bios so unable to check IRQ's in windows with the SATA drive connected.

Very Strange! and unless anyone here has experienced this specific problem on this model? then I would suggest this is best dealt with by MSI technical (send them an email)

have already submitted a technical request with MSI

the last time i did that it took them 2 weeks to respond so i'm not holding my breath for a quick response to this one either!!

I'm just about to use this board (K9NGM-L) for a cheap build for a friend (ordered for thursday) so I hope that I don't get any issues.
Mind you, I'm installing a single SATAII so it shouldn't flag up the same problem.

Think i'll try the Live Update feature to see what it suggests updating. (apart from the bios as the last time i did that it killed the mobo!!!)

then i think i'll try moving 1 of the IDE drives onto the same channel as the DVD burner and disconnect the CD burner to see if it can be seen that way!!

Got to try something while waiting for a reply from MSI as i got the SATA drive to replace 1 of the IDE drives that is making noises on startup (bearings are starting to go) and transfer the data from that drive before it fails altogether.

removed the CD burner and conected one of the hard drives as a slave on this IDE cable and it was detected without any problem!!

Got the data off this drive and replaced it with the hard drive that is failing - busy copying data off that drive to the SATA drive without any problems.

Looks like it's going to need a lot of digging through the BIOS settings to get the IDE and SATA to work together!!

Will keep you updated with the progress and what i manage to find out!!

so what drive is the boot drive with your OS loaded on it?
if the Sata is the boot without the IDE and when the IDE drives are installed I bet the boot order changes.
Try changing the boot order so you are booting from IDE1(etc...) instead of IDE0
that may help ....or not even be the issue

Boot drive is the SATA drive (set up a 10GB partition for the OS)

have not had a chance to try again with the IDE drives on the primary IDE port yet...

expecting a new copy of XP Pro 64bit edition by the weekend so will be playing about again then - fully ligit with a vista upgrade voucher.

once everything is back together i will have another play about with the bios settings to see what i can get sorted out...

OK so now I have an idea of your issue.
Does the computer quit booting when the IDE are installed?

As I explained above when the sata is installed in the BIOS boot order the sata drive reads as IDE0

When the IDE drives are installed IDE0 reads as the Primary IDE drive on the Primary IDE controller. The second IDE drive should read as IDE1 and the SATA should read as IDE2

Most of the time this is true but some manufacturers have custom settings in the BIOS

I recommend that you change the boot order in the BIOS so you can boot to the SATA when the IDE drives are installed

When you install the new OS you should install the OS with only the drive that you want the OS on the computer (like the SATA and one CD/DVD drive) and no zip or usb drives plugged in.

If you install with the IDE drives in at the same time the boot sector may install on the primary IDE drive and you will not be able to boot if you remove that drive for any reason

Hmmm!
I tested a SATA drive in a motherboard with 4 harddrives in it already...the SATA changes the driver order in a way I don't like so I kinda understand your issue a little bit better.
I will get back to you on how to solve your issue after I have time to look into how my system is booting

Just got a reply from MSI - return mobo for replacement / repair.

Think i'll just go with a different mobo

Since I posted on the 4th Dec I'm into my fourth K9NGM-L, very impressed by how fast and easy to setup this little budget board is!
I think you must have just been unlucky.
