Using Word 2007
I'm formatting my Professor's Resume and wanting running Headers. I have used {STYLEREF "Heading 1"} in the header but the results are not what we wish; it doesn't insert the last used Heading 1 style which is sometimes on the previous (not current) page. I realize that STYLEREF is working properly as far as its design by Microsoft.

Does anyone know of a way for me to get proper running headers?

TIA

I am mentioning this in the hopes that it helps.

I have several Word 2007 documents in which I am doing just that and it works great - references the H1 paragraph even though it may be several pages previous.

I did Insert > Quick Parts > Field > StyleRef > Heading 1

Lillabeth,

What you described is exactly what I have already done, and it doesn't work in the manner desired. For example, page 1 looks like:

------
Page 1
------
blahblahblah

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE (Heading 1 style)

List of professional experience
blahblahblah

------
Page 2
------
Several more lines of the list of professional experience is on this second page, followed by another heading:

RESEARCH GRANTS AND CONTRACTS (Heading 1 style)

List of research grants and contracts
blahblahblah

Therefore, on Page 2, the header should be

Professional Experience (cont'd)

but instead it reads

[red]Research Grants and Contracts (cont'd)[/red]

I understand the issue now. I have page breaks before each H1, so I dont have the same thing. I do, however, see it differently... You want
Therefore, on Page 2, the header should be

Professional Experience (cont'd)

but instead it reads

Research Grants and Contracts (cont'd)
And this seems reasonable to ask, but personally, I think they way Word does it makes more sense. If you are perusing the book looking for Research and Grants, I would expect the Header of the page on which the subject begins to display it.

Having said all that, I am sorry that I don't know how to help.

I agree, it does make more sense for a book, but not for a document such as a Resume where you want the header to reference the heading that relates to the text at the top of that page. Thanks, though, for your input--I appreciate it!

You need to add the /l switch to the StyleRef field which forces StyleRef to search from the bottom of the page up. That you resolve your problem.

When I try that, I get the text from the last (bottom-most) Heading1 on that page. If I understand correctly, dcompto wants the text from the most previous Heading1.

Oh! Yes it does that. Silly me: I am using reverse logic!

The /l switch is to make StyleRef start from the bottom of the page to find the first referenced style. That obviously won't meet the requirements: in fact it guarantees the opposite.

I've not tried this, but would putting a continuous section break immediately before the 'Research Grants' heading force that page's StyleRef to search back to the previous Heading 1?

Hi dcompto,

AFAIK, there's no way to get a STYLEREF field to pick up a heading from a previous page when there's a heading at the same level on the current page.

Cheers

Thanks to all. I do hope Microsoft will address this in a future update.

I've been using Word for 15 years, but I can't help but wish for my good 'ol (back-in-the-day) WordPerfect 5.1 (DOS) functionality. Among other things, it was fabulous to be able to place more than one header code on a page and the last one on the page take effect on the next page. It was perfect for doing running headers... Oh, well, back to Wordland.
