Running executables from the server to the client

I would never do this myself, however an associate has asked me how the client can run an executable file (Example: calculater.exe) from the server on their machine, without having to download the program.

There are specific reasons why they are doing this (note: it is not calc.exe they are running), and while I also try to provide other options for them, I haven't been able to find the script very easily that will allow this action.

Does anyone know how to accomplish this?

Thanks!

I don't see how pinging the remote server would allow us to run the .exe file from their server, on ours.(?)

Im sorry -
after reading your post more closely, i saw that you wanted to be able to run things on the client-side.

the only way I can think of doing this is by using some client-side VBScript. The problem is that the browser security level might be too high to give the browser the necessary permissions to launch an executable file.

Obviously, by just using client-side VBScript, you alienate all the non MSIE users out there, whether or not this is a problem is up to you.

I don't know enough about client-side VBScript to tell you what to do, but I think that might be your only solution.

good luck
