I remember being told at one time that running copper cables between building is not allowed. It was something to so with earthing.

Can anyone tell me if this is the case?

Thanks.

You can use copper between buildings but you will have to worry about lightening strikes. If it leaves from one building to another it needs to be a PE type cable. This needs to be terminated within 50' of the entrance on protectors. Because of the high smoke of this cable, it can be extended past that point if it is in a rigid conduit. This also needs to be grounded and bonded.

Telephone cables (Cat 3 or Cat nothing) are done this way all the time. Trouble is, this is expensive by the time you add the cost of Cat ?? rated protectors. This is why most people use fiber for their data needs between buildings. Fiber is glass and not a conductor of electricity.

Hope this helps.

When is the last time you helped someone, just because you were able to?

This is a subject you really need to know the code BEFORE you try running cable.
There are a few exceptions to the protection, but you need to do some studying to make sure you do this right. i.e. Zone of Protection.
The life safety implications are not worth going into this halfway and without full knowledge of the requirements.
If you do run fiber and it has any metal components in the jacket, you will need to bond at both ends.
